3 Things to Remember When Selecting an Assisted Living Community

Have you been given the task of looking into assisted living communities for yourself or a loved one? It can be a daunting task but it doesn’t have to be. Assisted living communities are wonderful options when you or your loved one can no longer safely be in a home environment.

At Legacy of Pewaukee, we want you to be well-informed during the decision making process. We have compiled a list of the top three areas to focus on when choosing an assisted living community.

Does the Community have a Consistent and Caring Staff?

This is one of the most important things to look into when choosing a community for yourself or a loved one. The staff, whether it be the care partners, nurses, kitchen staff, or receptionists, all end up playing a vital role in the lives of seniors in the community.

Is there a high turnover rate? Do you see brand new faces during each tour or visit at the community? This could be a sign that things within the company or community aren’t up to par. On the flipside, are you greeted by the same staff each time you visit? This is a great sign that the retention rate is good within the assisted living community.

When you walk down the hallways, does the staff smile warmly and greet you? Or do they walk by like you aren’t even there? These are things to focus in on and consider when narrowing down your choices. You’ll want to know you or your loved one will be well taken care of and a friendly, consistent staff is key.

Cleanliness of the Community

During your initial and subsequent tours, you should keep an eye out for the cleanliness of the community.

Be sure to look at the bathrooms, concierge area, ask to peek in the kitchen. All of these requests are important and should be allowed with ease. You should also ask about the cleaning schedule. Does the community offer housekeeping in the rooms? How often? There are many questions to ask, so be sure to jot them down now!

Resident and Family Member Satisfaction

One of the highest recommendations for an assisted living community is the great review from the current residents and their family members.

Don’t be shy! You can ask current residents how they like living in the community. Checking out reviews online from family members is just as important.

If you see an alarming review or a resident speaks poorly of the community, bring that up to the staff. Ask informed questions as to why that review mentioned a bad experience, or why a residents brought up something they didn’t enjoy. The staff can give you a better idea of what exactly is going on and if there were bad experiences, they should have a plan in place to correct it.
